Vela means gathering in Nepali, a word that beautifully captures the spirit of a place that once stood at the heart of Kurseong.
Originally opened in the 1940s by Bajay Man Bahadur Gurung and Boju Jethi Gurungseni as Cafe Health, the eatery was later renamed VELA by their daughters Manu and Shuva Gurung. It wasn’t just a restaurant it was a vibrant cultural hub where people came together to eat, write, sing, and celebrate.
From hosting poetry and proverb journals to becoming a rehearsal space for Deusi-Bhailo songs during Tihar, VELA thrived as a space for creativity and connection. It even served as a free overnight stop for traveling vendors offering warmth and rest in exchange for stories and smiles.
Tragically, this beloved gathering place met an untimely end when a fire destroyed it on Diwali night in the late 1950s. Though the physical structure was lost, VELA lives on in memory as a symbol of generosity, cultural pride, artistic expression, and communal warmth.
Today, when we say "VELA," we don't just speak of a restaurant we honor a legacy of gathering, of sharing stories, songs, meals, and dreams. VELA continues to inspire us to create spaces that celebrate connection, creativity, and community.

Located on the first floor above the popular eatery, Sol Cafe, our spacious 3BHK self-service apartment offers a cozy, wooden-furnished retreat. Centrally located, it’s just a 5-minute walk from Mall Road. Ideal for both relaxation and exploration, this homely space provides the perfect blend of comfort and convenience during your stay in the hills.

BEDROOMS
Room 1:
The master bedroom features an attached bathroom, a king-size bed, beautiful wooden flooring, and all the essential amenities for a relaxing stay. Room heaters are provided for added warmth. The room also includes a stylish dressing table and a spacious cupboard for your convenience and storage needs.
Rooms 2 & 3:
Both rooms offer a comfortable king-size bed, complemented by wooden flooring and all the essential amenities for a relaxing experience. Room heaters ensure added warmth during your stay. Each room also comes with a stylish dressing table and a spacious cupboard for your convenience. These rooms share a common bathroom just outside the door.
BATHROOMS
Each bathroom is equipped with a hot water geyser for your comfort.
Slippers, bath towels, toilet paper, body wash, shampoo, and soap are provided for all guests.
LIVING ROOM
The cozy living room features a TV with a Jio 4K setup box, perfect for a relaxed viewing
experience. You’ll also find a selection of books and board games for casual entertainment. A workspace with a table and chair is available for those who need to work during their stay.
DINING ROOM
Adjacent to the living room, the dining area includes a 6-seater wooden dining table, complete with all essential dining amenities such as plates, dishes, and a refrigerator. The space is filled with natural light, offering a comfortable environment for meals.
KITCHEN
The fully-equipped kitchen includes a 4-burner LPG gas stove, water filter, microwave, toaster, and fridge, along with all the essential utensils and crockery for your convenience.
*Please note, the oven below the gas stove is currently not in working condition.
Guests are expected to wash the utensils after use, as this is a self-service apartment.
BALCONY
A spacious balcony with a table and chairs offers the perfect spot to enjoy a sunset view, surrounded by plants and flowers for a relaxing atmosphere.
Guest Access
The apartment is located on the first floor, while the upper floor is our private space, used by another family.
Other Things to Note
We can arrange taxi services for airport/train station pickups and drops, as well as sightseeing tours.
For meals, you’re welcome to use our fully equipped kitchen, or explore nearby cafes and restaurants.

This is the best service apartment I’ve stayed at in Darjeeling with my family.
